#1: Do Not Respond to Alarming Message
Messages that ask for a quick response from the receiver are
generally phishy. For example: ‘You have won a lottery’, ‘Your account is
suspended’ etc. Such mails are sent with the aim of identity theft and call for
some confidential data that consequently leads to loss of account details or
personal information.
Many a times, you click on websites that ask for
the username and password of the account. Getting account credentials through
fake website pages is the attempt by hackers to frequently receive information
that might include account login information, credit card details, social
security numbers etc.
#3: Do Not Click on
the Links Directly
Whenever an email seems to have arrived from an unknown
source and it includes link to a website, do not click on directly. Hover mouse
cursor over the link and confirm if it is redirecting to defined website. This
can be very helpful to verify if the link is pointing to the promised
legitimate website or not.
#4: Check the HTTPS
Connection
Whenever, you are directed to a page where
account login or any other confidential details are asked, ensure that the
communication between the web server and web browser is protected by secure
socket layer which is a cryptography protocol. It can be checked through the
lock sign with HTTPS instead of HTTP in the website name.
#5: Logo and Images Could be Fake
Possibility is that the company logos and the
images used in the email are fake. Low resolution images, mis-spelled text, subject
in upper case etc are some of the factors that can help to detect a spam mail.
